(NETHERLANDS / HUNGARY) State Secretary Paul (Emancipation) will be attending Pride in Budapest on behalf of the caretaker cabinet. She will also be taking part in the Pride march, but only if it is permitted. Otherwise, she will participate in an alternative programme.
It was previously announced that Amsterdam Mayor Halsema also wants to take part in the Pride March. She also wants to encourage her colleague in Budapest.
In March, the Hungarian parliament passed a law banning the annual Pride March. However, Mayor Karácsony said the day before yesterday that the march on Saturday 28 June can still go ahead. According to him, the national government cannot intervene because it is a municipal event.
The day before Pride, the Mayor of Budapest will also be giving a reception for the organisers of the festivities, among others. The Dutch State Secretary will address them on that occasion. Paul wants to make it clear "that the cabinet stands for the rights of LGBTIQ+ people throughout Europe".
"The European Union is a union of values. This includes being allowed to be who you are and to love who you want", says Paul, who is responsible for primary and secondary education in addition to emancipation.
Last month, the House of Representatives adopted a motion from the Volt and VVD parties to send a cabinet delegation to Budapest. It was explicitly pointed out that Hungary is a member of the European Union and should therefore adhere to "core values and principles on which the European Union is built, such as freedom, the rule of law and democracy".
That was before the fall of the Dutch cabinet.
