(NETHERLANDS / THE HAGUE) The GroenLinks-PvdA faction in the Lower House wants the delivery of Dutch components for the Israeli air defense system Iron Dome to be stopped. "Israel is currently the aggressor, if Israel were the victim, we would have a different discussion," said MP Piri (right on image) in a debate with caretaker Minister of Foreign Affairs Veldkamp (NSC). He reacted shocked to the position, because the air defense system protects civilians from rocket attacks.
"People are sitting in shelters there. People who agree with the Netanyahu government and people who disagree with him," said Veldkamp (left on image). "I note that GL-PvdA has made a U-turn on this point. It is a U-turn that we as a cabinet will not adopt in any case."
According to Piri, the Iron Dome is part of Israel's attack force and cannot be seen exclusively as a means of defense for civilians. "Would Netanyahu have attacked Iran if he did not have the Iron Dome? Israel dares to do this, precisely because of this system." She believes that the delivery of components by Dutch companies should stop and wants a complete arms embargo against Israel.
This puts the party directly opposite the VVD (right-wing liberals). VVD MP Van der Burg believes that Piri "must be honest" about the consequences for Israeli citizens. "Then also state the consequences of this position. Namely that Tel Aviv could be completely wiped off the map by Iran." MPs Ceder (CU - Social Christians) and Kahraman (NSC - Center Conservatives) also warned of an "existential threat" for Israel if the air defense system fails.
This year, the government has granted seven permits to companies for the delivery of components for the Iron Dome. These transactions fit within the European frameworks for arms export control, the government reported to the House. Iran has now succeeded in breaking through the defense with drone attacks, say defense experts.
