(NETHERLANDS / THE HAGUE) The Dutch cabinet regrets Israel's attacks on Iran. Prime Minister Schoof speaks of "alarming attacks" and calls on all parties "to remain calm and refrain from further attacks and retaliation."
Minister of Foreign Affairs Veldkamp spoke with the Israeli and Iranian foreign ministers this morning. He wants negotiations on "sustainable stability" to resume soon.
"We regret that Israel feels compelled to take this military action," Veldkamp says about the attacks Israel carried out last night on the army leadership and nuclear installations. He does not know what information Israel has that led to these attacks.
Veldkamp emphasizes that Israel is not alone in its fear of Iran developing nuclear weapons. "Concerns about Iran's nuclear program are shared internationally. The most sustainable way to remove that threat is to negotiate."
Minister of Defense Brekelmans says that the situation in the Middle East is escalating. "It worries us a lot. Of course we are also concerned about Iran's nuclear development.
The concern that Iran could eventually deploy nuclear weapons is justified. But that does not mean that it is good to intervene militarily now. We have always chosen the diplomatic route.
GL-PvdA (Green Left / Social Democrats) leader Timmermans also urges the use of "all diplomatic means to prevent escalation and bloodshed". VVD (right-wing liberal) leader Yesilgöz expects that "this new regional war" will also affect Europe and points out the importance of defense investments and international diplomacy.
